THE LOWDOWN
Let's drill! If you arrive first, unlock the wheels before moving net into place, then lock. There are four courts at this venue, and Rec players usually begin showing up by 8:30 AM.

Drilling will take place from 8-9 AM for now, after which players can usually stay for rec games. (See the Hope Highlands group in Player Lineup for info on rec games at this facility.) On some days, two of the courts are dedicated to tennis play. Mainly, though, there is at least one court available at this time of day for drilling.

A SAMPLE DRILL ~ GET TO KNOW YOUR PADDLE

This drill might seem very easy, especially if you’ve been playing for a while. But, one of the most common errors for beginners is not understanding that different parts of your paddle will produce different shot power.

Simply take a ball and your paddle and practice hitting the ball straight up in the air. Your goal is not to let it hit the floor. Note: you may want to do this in a big open space and away from anything that’s breakable.

As you get used to hitting the ball, try hitting the ball with different parts of your paddle, like toward the top of the paddle, the sides, and towards the grip.

You may start to notice that if you hit the ball in the sweet spot, you’ll most often get a truer hit, meaning it will have the most power, and the ball will go straight up. However, as you get closer to the sides, the ball not only loses power but will start to go astray.

This is a good exercise to help you focus on hitting the sweet spot more often.
